In a disturbing series of events reported around recent weekend, multiple incidents of police murders have sparked outrage and condemnation across Brazil.
- Murder in São Paulo: In the early hours of December 2, a man was thrown alive from a bridge by military police in the Vila Clara neighborhood of São Paulo. Video evidence has surfaced, showing the incident and contradicting any claims of justification. This act of violence has drawn widespread condemnation from the public and human rights advocates.
- Execution in a store: On the same day, rapper Eduardo Taddeo released footage of his nephew, Gabriel Renan da Silva Soares, being shot by an off-duty police officer in Jardim Prudência, São Paulo. The officer claimed self-defense, but security camera footage shows Gabriel exiting a store with stolen cleaning products before being shot in the back. This incident has further fueled calls for justice and accountability.
- Murder of a Rideshare Driver: In Camaragibe, near Recife, police officer Venilson Cândido da Silva shot and murdered a rideshare driver over a R$7 fare dispute. Witnesses reported that the driver questioned the officer about the fare, leading to a heated argument that ended with the officer drawing his weapon and firing. Following the incident, Venilson was recognized by residents and subsequently beaten before being taken into custody.
Regarding the rebellion after the last murder, A Nova Democracia writes: “Many motorcyclists hit him with helmets. The beating, driven by a sense of people’s justice, continued until police arrived and took Venilson into a van. On December 2, residents also burned debris on Avenida Belmiro Coreira in a protest for justice for Thiago’s life.”
