Brazil – Manaus: Leaders of the housing movement denounce attempted murder
We hereby share an unofficial translation of an article published by A Nova Democracia.
The leaders of the Manaos housing movement, Júlio and Ione from the MLTI (Struggle Movement of Independent Workers) publicly denounce, through their social media accounts, an attempted murder against them that occurred on October 8, around 11:40 hours, on the avenue Constantino Nery.
At that time, both leaders were crossing the street with a baby in their arms at a pedestrian crossing, as a car suddenly advanced towards Júlio César, crossing the red light. The activist barely managed to escape, jumping to the sidewalk.
According to the report, the leaders were unable to identify the license plate of the car. One of the motorcyclists that were nearby told Júlio that “it is good that you saw that the guy wanted to run you over on purpose”.
This is not the first time that Júlio, who coordinates one of the largest occupation movements in the city of Manaos, has suffered assassination attempts. Years ago, he received a call from contacts of him stating that armed men were going to his house to murder him. The leader fled the scene and, when he returned, found his pets dead.
