Below we share an unofficial translation of an article published by Tjen Folket Media in Norway. This article was published on January 19.

After 15 months of war and genocide, negotiations between Israel and Hamas in the Qatari capital Doha have led to a ceasefire agreement.

The ceasefire is described as fragile, and a large part of the Israeli government voted against accepting it. The agreement will be implemented in three phases of 42 days each. The fighting will cease and Israel will gradually withdraw its military from Gaza. The AFP news agency reports that Israel will release between 30 and 50 Palestinian prisoners for every Israeli prisoner held in Gaza.

Some news media have pointed out that Yahya Sinwar, who was the military-political leader of Hamas in Gaza during the October 7 counter-offensive, was himself released in a prisoner exchange in 2011, when Israel exchanged 1,026 Palestinian prisoners for 1 captured Israeli soldier.

It is too early to determine what long-term consequences the 15-month genocidal war will have for the Palestinian people’s liberation struggle in the short and long term, but we can state some clear facts. First, October 7 was a major political, military and moral victory for the Palestinian resistance movement, and a major defeat for Israel. Second, Israel’s Netanyahu has failed in his two official goals for the 15-month war: to completely annihilate Hamas and to return the Israeli prisoners to Israel. Third, the Palestinian armed national resistance struggle will continue.
